Oscar-nominated Jake Gyllenhaal is coming to Dubai.
The Southpaw star will be the star turn at Decemeber's Dubai International Film Festival, where he will receive Variety‘s ‘International Star of the Year’ Award.
The actor, whose recent big screen hits include Nightcrawler, Everest and Demolition, is one of Hollywood's hottest properties right now, having shown continued development in more than 15 years at the top.
He first hit the big time in 2001 in the cult classic Donnie Darko, and has since worked with legendary filmmakers Sam Mendes (Jarhead in 2005), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, alongside Heath Ledger in 2005), David Fincher (Zodiac in 2007) and Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners (2013).
His latest flick, boxing drama Southpaw saw him undertake a staggering fitness regime and made his physique the envy of men the world over. He lost 25 pounds, embarked on a gruelling six-hour-a-day gym routine and shut himself off from friends and family. He learnt to box too.
Speaking to Time Out Dubai during the film's release, he explained how he chooses his role: ‘Sometimes it is [about the director] and sometimes it’s the director, editor, cinematographer, set designers, producers. I think that a movie is never made with just one mind. I try and have the knowledge of every single department, and what they’ve done.'
He also suggested he had a future behind the camera himself: ‘Yes I would like to direct sometime. It hasn’t come up yet. It’s starting to, but I see how hard it is, and how many people think they can do it. I think you really have to know what you want to say. And you really have to be prepared: not just prepared in terms of skill, but as a human, because it takes such patience. I have more to learn, but I’d like to try my hand at it some day.’
Speaking of Gyllenhaal's appearance at DIFF, Abdulhamid Juma, chairman of the festival, said: 'Jake Gyllenhaal is a huge talent and undeniably one of the most accomplished actors of his generation. His screen presence has captivated audiences since his earliest roles and he is one of the most versatile actors working today. We are absolutely delighted to honour his extraordinary talents.'
An exclusive public ‘In Conversation’ with Jake Gyllenhaal Q&A event will be held during the course of the Festival.
