Forget the negative press, most Emiratis have already applied for their new UAE ID cards, with just 10% left to sign-up…

Stories of woe surrounding the process of applying for the new UAE ID cards have filled the news for months but it would seem UAE locals have bucked the trend with 90% already registered.

Out of 825,000 Emiratis most have already signed-up for their new cards, according to Thamer Rashid Al Qasimi, Planning Director and Project Management Director at Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).

Maybe it was the fear of being fined? It was announced earlier this year that Emiratis who did not register before the deadline had to pay Dhs1,000. The original deadline of the December 31, 2008 was extended by three months by a cabinet decision on December 28 as about 190,000 Emiratis had not registered then.

They were exempted from the fine until March 31. Emiratis must now all have an ID card for any official transaction with government entities from April 1.
