Free wi-fi in every Dubai taxi by the end of 2019

There's nothing worse than running out of data during a taxi journey and realising that you don't actually know the way to where you're going.

But that situation is set to become a thing of the past with the announcement that every single one of Dubai's 10,800 cabs will soon offer free wi-fi.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed a deal last week with telecoms network du to equip all of the city's taxis with the service across the city.

Riders will be able to connect their phones, tablets and other handheld devices to the wi-fi to access the internet totally free of charge.

It is hoped that the service will be installed in all vehicles within one year, with the project set to start immediately.

Ahmad Hashem Behroozian, chief executive of RTA, said: “According to the agreement, du will start fitting the required devices to taxis.

“All fleet vehicles of the six franchise companies operating in Dubai will be covered by the service within one year from the date of signing this agreement.”

The initiative is part of efforts to make Dubai the smartest city in the world, which is something we can totally get behind.

Not only are we testing self-driving cars on the roads and equipping all of our cabs with wi-fi, but we've already got lightning fast travel systems and a whole host of smart technology.
