The online retailer will offer items from Souq.com as well as products from Amazon US

Amazon officially launches in the UAE

Amazon has officially launched in the UAE after months of speculation.

Previously, customers in the country were only able to access the Dubai-based Souq.com marketplace which offered a small selection of the retail giant's products as well as items from third-party sellers.

Now the websites have been combined, buyers can also snap up five million products from the company's US site at competitive prices – all delivered with the usual speedy service that has made Amazon famous across the globe.

Shoppers can search the store before paying in dirhams using credit cards or even cash on arrival.

Arabic language has also been introduced to the website and mobile app to cater for local customers.

And in even better news, Amazon.ae is offering free next day delivery on orders over Dhs100 as well as paid same-day delivery to certain areas in the UAE.

Ronaldo Mouchawar, co-founder of Souq and vice president of Amazon MENA, said: "Amazon.ae brings together Souq's local know-how and Amazon's global expertise, something we believe will be of significant benefit to UAE customers.

"Our combined team in the region has grown to over 3,600 employees, and each and every one of us is thrilled to invite UAE customers to join us on this journey, where we will continue to grow our product range, ensure great prices, and provide a convenient and safe shopping experience."

Souq.com was bought out by Amazon for $580 million (Dhs2.1 billion) in 2017, but in recent months the company has been trying to get sellers to put more of their products on Amazon’s main site.

Before the launch of Amazon.ae, Souq.com was one of the largest online retailers found in the Middle East, with about 41 million visits to its catalogue of more than 8.5 million products in 35 different categories.
