DXB to trial passport and boarding pass-free experience

Your next visit to Dubai International Airport could become totally paperless

DXB to trial passport and boarding pass-free experience

Getting through the airport could be about to get a whole lot easier, because Dubai Airports and Emirates are piloting (pun fully intended) a brand-new paperless airport experience, and we can’t wait to see how it’s going to work.

Arabian Business has reported that plans to replace traditional paper documents (like passports, tickets etc) with biometrics and facial recognition. That has already been tested on flights between London and Dubai, while plans are in place on flights from DXB to Australia later this year.

“We ran a trial between London Gatwick and Dubai… and we’re now trying to expand that,” said Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) AGM and World Air Transport Summit in Seoul. “We learned from that trial that the technology works: the idea of a single identity applied in different locations works, and if we can make that work globally, that’s the intention.”

It effectively means that the system (dubbed One ID) will be used in place of check-in desks, passport control, anywhere that you need a physical check of your documents.

“The vision for One ID is a paperless travel experience where passengers can fly around the world safely and securely using only their individual biometric data,” said IATA Director General and CEO Alexandre de Juniac.

With some 90 million passengers strolling through the gates at DXB in 2018, and even more set to travel through the airport this year, have a paper-free experience is something we can’t wait to see more of.
