Colour us surprised: when we last spoke to the men from the Ministry, way back in the dim and distant past of October 2009, they told us that they would be residing at Chi for the foreseeable future. Apparently they couldn’t see much further than New Year’s Eve, because the brand has now upped sticks and moved to Ocean Club Dubai at the Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort & Spa.
In fact, Ocean Club Dubai is treating this as a complete relaunch of its al fresco venue, which has been redesigned to accommodate 3,000 people and now offers access to the resort’s beach in the early afternoon. It’s also branding itself as ‘Dubai’s most exclusive outdoor day and night club’, which is a bit odd because it seems to accept anyone who’s willing to buy a ticket. We’re guessing this just means it’s not free like Barasti (oh, and that there’s a VIP bit, too, but us proles can get in just fine).
Anyway, who’s playing this Ministry-affiliated opening night? None other than Funkagenda, who has featured on such labels as Positiva, Toolroom and Subliminal, and worked with the likes of Mark Knight, ATFC and Trophy Twins. His obsession with mixing and remixing tracks means his sets invariably include some unique tunes, and his constant world-travelling schedule means he should be able to bring some tasty new stuff to Dubai’s jaded ears.
Funkagenda plays Ministry of Sound at Ocean Club Dubai, January 29.
