Kelly Rowland

She’s starting to step out of Beyoncé’s shadow, and there’s a lot more to Kelly Rowland than meets the eye

Interview, Music feature

Kelly Rowland, Kelly Rowland… where do I know her from?
She was in Destiny’s Child.

No, that was Beyoncé.
No, she was the other one.

Oh, right. Yeah, sucks to be her.
Not at all – Kelly’s had a pretty good ride of it since Destiny’s Child split. Her debut solo album, Simply Deep, span off three charting singles: ‘Stole’, ‘Can’t Nobody’ and ‘Like This’, and the follow-up, Miss Kelly, featured ‘Work’ and ‘Daylight’.

I don’t remember any of them.
Sure you do. ‘Oh no, oh no, ain’t nobody cool like me…’

Yeah, yeah, I do. That’s ‘Can’t Nobody,’ right?
Yep. And she’s had number ones worldwide with Nelly on ‘Dilemma’ and David Guetta on last year’s ‘When Love Takes Over’. She’s also done some acting work, on Freddy vs Jason and romcom The Seat Filler.

So it’s been all sunshine and bunnies for her, then?
Er, not quite. In January last year Kelly became the centre of some media rumours when she had an alleged argument with the Knowles family.

As in Beyoncé Knowles?
Oh yes. Kelly was being managed by Music World Entertainment, the company owned by Beyoncé’s dad, Matthew Knowles. And that was all fine and Jim-dandy until Solange Knowles, Beyoncé’s little sister, started trying to push her career – with help from Music World Entertainment.

Uh-oh.
Indeed – at 2008’s televised Fashion Rocks concert, Solange was selected to get on stage with the likes of Beyoncé, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake. And, word has it, Kelly felt that Solange’s space in the limelight ought to have been hers, ultimately leading to Kelly dropping Matthew Knowles’s company. The thing is, Rowland was due for an album deal with Geffen/Interscope through Knowles’s production company, so dropping him led to them dropping her.

Man, that sucks.
Yeah, but hopefully her recent success with Guetta will result in her being picked up elsewhere. And at least her career’s had a higher profile than the other one from Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams.

Michelle Williams?
Oh no, don’t –

Who on earth is Michelle Williams?
Oh boy…
