If we had caps, we’d take them off to Metal Asylum. What started out as a small-time labour of love for the benefit of the local metal scene has flourished into one of the region’s best club nights for local rock music of all flavours. And recently it’s been going even further than that. Last week saw the event playing host to Iranian metal band Arsemes, and this week the stage is given up to Indian rockers Evergreen.
Is this the beginning of a more globalised Metal Asylum? We suppose that depends on whether these two events prove successful, but, given the quality of the bands, they really ought to. Evergreen, you may recall, played Dubai SoundCity last year, and clearly their brand of metal-influenced progressive hard rock left a mark on the city’s promoters.
And if you’re not one for new things, don’t worry – Evergreen’s set will be half originals and half covers, though their original work is strong enough to carry the entire set. Fingers crossed they won’t be the last international act to step up to the Rockwell stage.
Metal Asylum is at Rockwell Café, April 9, Dhs50.
