Giuseppe Verdi was one of the most influential composers of the 19th century and something of an Italian treasure. His operas La Traviata and Aida continue to be performed today, more than 100 years since they were first written, and his funeral in 1901, which saw orchestras from all over Italy performing in unison, remains the largest public assembly in the history of the country.
While the performance of his Messa da Requiem at the American University in Dubai this week (co-organised by a German bank, oddly enough) won’t be quite to that scale, the gathering will still be spectacular. The performance sees 130 singers from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, as well as 65 musicians from the UAE, gathering to perform the composer’s celebrated work; excellent news for fans of classical music in the region.
