‘Time won’t take my love… awaaay,’ went the chorus of Black Box’s scream-packed, bouncy 1989 dance hit ‘Ride on Time’. And Barasti is counting on that working both ways, as it brings the band out to play Dubai alongside ‘It’s My Life’ singer Dr Alban. You can remember the choruses, of course – how could you possibly forget? – but if you’re not quite as knowledgeable about the people behind them, read on.
Despite their name, Black Box never crashed and burned – though they did come precariously close during a sticky bit of legal trouble in the late ’80s, after ‘Ride on Time’ had become a smash hit. It heavily sampled
(ie all the lyrics came from) ‘Love Sensation’, a 1980 hit by Loleatta Holloway; displeased, she unleashed the legal hounds. Still, they went on to achieve success with other singles, particularly ‘Everybody Everybody’, ‘Fantasy’, ‘I Don’t Know About Anybody Else’ and ‘Strike It Up’.
Unlike some other musicians, Dr Alban actually is a doctor of sorts – a dentist, to be precise. He started DJing to fund his studies in Sweden and kept it going after opening his first practice, although he gave up the tooth-bothering when his music career took off, most notably with reggae-house track ‘It’s My Life’. Back in 2006, Dr Alban and Haddaway (of ‘What is Love’ fame) released the single ‘I Love the ’90s’; clearly he’s in the right frame of mind for this night.
Black Box and Dr Alban play Flashback to the ’90s at Barasti, May 20, Dhs100.
