Rapper Plan B’s conversion from acoustic hip hoppist to retro-futurist soul boy scored him a number one album. Jamie Lidell made a similar leap – from clinically glitchy electro to melancholic glitchy soul – but his love of music’s more demanding peripheries means he’s steered well clear of the charts, despite having produced some thrilling avant-pop.

Lidell’s cult appeal is demonstrated by this album’s parade of A-list guest stars, including Beck, Feist and members of Wilco and Grizzly Bear. Given the supporting cast, it’s not surprising that a folkish element
has crept into Lidell’s ever-evolving sound, but the resulting concoction is entirely of Lidell’s own brewing.
