Brian Wilson album review

Beach Boys genius completes half-completed Gershwin numbers

Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin

Beach Boys genius completes half-completed Gershwin numbers? Brilliant, yes? Well, no. Of the two collaborative compositions here, the highlight is ‘Nothing but Love’: all swoony vocals, bouncy piano and sax flourishes, a bit like past-it Beach Boys versus Madness. Otherwise, it’s 12 covers replete with Wilson’s trademark harmonies, largely reducing Gershwin classics to chugging boogie-woogie or Status Quo-like country blooze. Why, Brian, why?
