Frankie Knuckles differs from most DJs in that he actually goes by his real name, rather than a daft pseudonym. More importantly, however, Frankie is one of the few DJs who has had a street named after him (Frankie Knuckles Way in Chicago) – an accolade that indicates just how influential he has been to modern-day house (the music, rather than the residential building). In the words of Billboard’s Larry Flick: ‘He’s probably the best dance music producer we have in America. He understands the groove, but he understands songs, and the whole picture.’ We’d usually sneer at anyone who calls themselves ‘The Godfather of House’, but in Frankie’s case it’s a deserved title. He hits Trilogy this week to show us why.
Frankie Knuckles plays Sanctuary on Thursday 26.
