Rodney Smith has made a marked but natural swerve on his fifth LP, possibly encouraged to stray from his distinctive take on soulful, sharp-rhyming hip hop by the success of hybrid popsters such as Toddla T (who had first dibs on the terrific ‘Watch Me Dance’). Despite the infuriating security messages obscuring the preview copy, it’s clear that 4ever… is urgently inventive, ranging over dark future-bass, disco soul, dubby soundscaping, dancehall, doo-wop and deep house, and showcasing guests including vocalist Rokhsan (on club banger ‘Get the Get’). As RM says it, ‘suavay’.
