Jane’s Addiction

The Great Escape Artist is group's fourth record

The Great Escape Artist
3/5

Those who feared the 2008 original line-up Jane’s reunion tour would amount to nothing but a memory lane cash-in will be thrilled that they’ve finally managed a fourth record. Although original bassist Eric Avery opted out, drummer Steve Perkins and perennially topless guitarist Dave Navarro continue to provide pulverising beats and meaty riffery, and surprisingly, TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek has joined the fold on bass.

‘End to the Lies’ begins with a low-end rumble before exploding into searing guitar lines and Farrell’s distinctively epic double-tracked, echoed howl. The upfront, driving basslines continue to give ‘Irresistible Force (Met the Immovable Object)’ and ‘Curiosity Kills’ a dark and sinewy groove. ‘Twisted Tales’ provides another highlight, revelling in its minor chord misery, while ‘Broken People’ proves the band can pen a song that’s affecting without over-embellishment. Occasionally they lose their way (the flabby ‘Splash a Little Water On It’), but overall this finds the alt rock originators reinvigorated.
