Another alumni from the UK’s X Factor you may have missed in the UAE. So let us bring you up to speed: Scouser, seems nice, voice that was waaay too good for reality TV. Her debut album is modishly old-school post-post-Winehouse ’60s soul, from the tight horn stabs to relentlessly bluesy lyrics. These are sweetly sung but tough-talking tales of rejection, heartbreak and tragic lessons learned. ‘All that glitter and all that gold won’t make you happy if you’ve been bought and sold,’ she huskily breathes on ‘Glitter & Gold’, managing to make the sentiment sound not cynical but world-weary.
If only there was more on this album for her to get her vocal teeth into. Sadly, the songwriting is lacking a knockout punch, largely consisting of forgettable drive-time power-soul material. Hopefully she’ll survive to produce a better testament to her ability.
