Becky Lucas spoke to Marc ‘Buffy’ Wise and Tammy ‘Gorgeous Dubai’ Tinawi, the two prestigious people behind fancy new Elegante night, Prestige Clubbing.
What’s the Prestige manifesto?
Tammy: Using our cumulative 20 years experience in the industry worldwide, we’re aiming to bring over the biggest and most unforgettable global clubbing brands and experiences.
Buffy: To bring theatre back to clubland. Also, being of the ‘old guard’, I’m inspired by the original acid house roots: peace, love and unity! House music all night long! And with no pretension (everyone is special, everyone is a VIP).
How are you going to make it theatrical? Should we learn lines?
Tammy: (Oh no you don’t!) The fact that Elegante is a theatre helps. But no, there won’t be any pantomimes or anything. But it will be like nothing Dubai has seen before.
Buffy: (Oh yes you did!) My whole life is a pantomime! It won’t happen over night, but we want to be in a position where we can bring a Broadway musical production to a club night in future…
What were you both doing in your past lives?
Tammy: Gorgeous Dubai, Hat Club and Pukka Up nights all in Dubai. And pre-Dubai? I worked for Manumission in Ibiza. I think I was a nun in my real past life – but I’m making up for it in this one!
Buffy: I am fortunate enough to have been involved in the acid house explosion in 1988-90. I promoted my first rave at 18 (I’m now a young 30-something). I lived in Ibiza from 1991-2001, and have since travelled the world as a DJ, promoter and club manager for Ministry Of Sound, Manumission, Space and Trilogy, to name a few. I’ve never called it a job: it’s a passion and lifestyle. As for past lives… I always thought I was a 60s baby as I’m a Mod at heart. I reckon I was there with The Beatles, the Small Faces and The Who with a scooter and green parka. We are the Mods!
You’re kicking off with a Hed Kandi night – why?
Tammy: When I was growing up in clubland, Hed Kandi was the night we all planned ahead and got totally glammed up for. They never failed to put on an amazing show. They share the same vision as us.
Why DJ Steven Quarre and Peyton?
Tammy: Prestige Clubbing is about the whole experience, not just the DJ. We will be bringing all the time-tested resident DJs from each global brand. With Hed Kandi we’ll always have a live performance to complement the night. Peyton has the most incredible voice, and has wowed the crowds every time he’s played here.
Which other ‘super brands’ or DJs should we expect in the coming months?
Tammy: Lots and lots! At the end of the month we’re launching the biggest clubbing brand in the world, the daddy of them all – Ministry Of Sound. Then expect a showcase of all their sub-brands, kicking off with Club Classics. We’re also planning the return of home-grown Gorgeous Dubai and super stylish UK favourite Moneypenny’s. We’ll continue with the fun and flirty Hat Club and Pukka Up are bringing a certain Basement Jaxx lead singer over in March. And that’s just to get you started…
Buffy: I want Dubai’s finest residents to play alongside all our global brand guests. I won’t say too much about the Club Classics nights…OK, I will: Frankie Knuckles (the godfather of house), Alfredo (the godfather of Ibiza) and Marshall Jefferson (the creator of the first ever house record 1986) are all on the growing list. I feel privileged to have worked with these guys and now class them as friends. We can’t wait to show Dubai where clubbing started.
What kind of outfits should Prestige clubbers wear?
Buffy: Dress to impress: go out in the afternoon and treat yourself to a new outfit for the evening.
