If you like your country blues/gothic Americana on the rootsy, acoustically keening and old-timey side, John Paul White and Joy Williams are for you. The Nashville-based, Adele-endorsed duo’s touchstones (John Lee Hooker, Emmylou Harris, Iron & Wine) span genres and generations, most strikingly on the timeless ‘20 Years’ and the anguished title track. They do occasionally edge into Shania Twain territory and covering ‘Billie Jean’ suggests try-hard reinvention, but still, there’s plenty to admire here.
