Jonquil album review

Point of Go

Point of Go

Part of Oxford’s Blessing Force art music collective (Foals, Pet Moon), the Jonquil sextet have undergone some changes since their last LP in ’08. Three members left to form Trophy Wife and although singer Hugo is still at the helm here, he was also busy with his solo project Chad Valley. Now established as a quartet, Jonquil wrote and recorded this third album in six weeks, which perhaps accounts for the clear, bright focus. Blending chiming, giddy guitars (‘It’s My Part’) with spry, Aztec Camera-shaped über-pop (‘Run’) and a dash of brass and ’60s guitar melancholia (‘Real Cold’), it feels like summer’s come early, but not a moment too soon.
