Perhaps Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet, there are dark things afoot in Swan Lake. It’s those haunting themes that inspired the 2010 movie Black Swan, which earned Natalie Portman an Oscar for Best Actress for her tortured turn as a dancer struggling to play the lead, and inspired a fresh interest in the classic work. Traditionally the curtain can go down on one of two endings: a teary tragedy or Americanised ‘happy ending’. Many will be relieved to know the 26-strong Bulgarian production by Serdica Music takes the latter route.
