Gig announcements in Dubai

Hot rumours and new openings in the city

Well, what a week it’s been for gig announcements: there are more big-name acts coming to Dubai and the UAE in the next few months than we’ve had hot brunches. We’re having trouble keeping track of them all,
so to bring you up to speed…

The biggest news is that Eminem – you know, the best-selling artist of the noughties – will close the Abu Dhabi F1 this year. Despite his overwhelming critical and commercial success, Marshall Mathers has big shoes to fill, taking the slot belonging to Paul McCartney last year. It’s a bittersweet announcement for some who were still hoping for a Rolling Stones reunion, but overall we admire Flash’s brazen booking here. The ‘real Slim Shady’ will play the Yasalam After-Race Concert series on Sunday November 4, joining previously announced stars Kylie Minogue and Nickelback, who play at Yas Island on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 respectively.

Elsewhere, Jamaican-American rapper Sean Kingston and US rapper Bow Wow are heading to Dubai, joining Jason Derulo at the Caribbean Carnival, at Burj Park on Thursday November 1 and Friday 2.

All this hype somewhat eclipsed news of the final Atelier/Festival line-up, with Ciara, Craig David, LMFAO’s SkyBlu and DJ Antoine joining 50 Cent, Nelly, Duffy and Eva Simons onstage at the all-day event at Meydan on Friday October 19. Oh, and you may have heard murmurs about some kid called Justin Bieber playing at The Sevens stadium next May…

Finally, we’re pleased to see that Sony’s new local label, Lionheart, has got off to a healthy start with a trio of cool new albums from regional talent: Syrian composer Iyad Rimawi’s Tales from Damascus, The Spy From Cairo’s Arabadub and Mardo El-Noor’s Baghdad Jazz Club – which we’ll be reviewing next week.
