The Score with Amjad Ali Khan at Madinat Theatre
While not as well known in the West as the late, great festival favourite Ravi Shankar, Amjad Ali Khan has done for the sarod what Shankar did for the sitar. It’s a very different instrument – like a fretless oud or lute – but one that’s equally integral to Indian classical music. Ali Khan’s credentials are exemplary; the sixth in a long line of musical masters, he’ll be performing alongside sarod-playing sons Ayaan and Amaan. As well as picking up fans in high places including the UK’s Prince Charles and the Dalai Lama, Ali Khan has also been honoured by several American institutions including, oddly, being made an honorary citizen of the state of Texas. See page 6 for an interview with the star.
