Alicia Keys is coming to Dubai, Jazz@Pizza Express comes into its own and plenty of new local music news.
Big gig news to keep you going over the hotter months – Alicia Keys is playing Dubai. She’ll be returning to Dubai Media City on Friday November 15, nearly a decade after she made her Middle Eastern debut at the same venue in 2004. She’ll have competition though, with Sandance organisers already announcing a second festival of the season that night (and hinting at a especially funky headliner).
In other news, just on the cusp of summer music restaurant-bar Jazz@Pizza Express has recently obtained a licence. We’re expecting this venue, which hosts live music every weeknight, to come back even stronger after summer.
While live music will be put on temporary hold over summer, there’s plenty of new recorded music to be excited about. Dubai-based Lebaense soul singer Rouba has released the first single of her forthcoming debut album, ‘Marrat’, the only track to be sung in Arabic from Mama’s Back (due out in October). Accompanied by a pro-shot video, despite the language the single is a consciously commercial soul-pop groove, recalling the likes of Norah Jones.
If you’re looking for something a little bit more ragged, last week Dubai-based singer-songwriter Abbo launched a new EP The Lend. With a mix of an acoustic Jack Johnson-esque bounce and his own gravelly Americana vocals, it’s worth a listen.
Longstanding UAE rockers Juliana Down confused fans recently by debuting a new electronic direction. Playing at The Fridge the band used keyboards, electronic drums and a stack of samples to create a brave new sound. We’re intrigued.
That’s all for now party people – so for one last time, get out, and enjoy yourselves.
