Abri and The Funk Radius at Jazz@PizzaExpress
Practically a UAE supergroup, this funky outfit brings together the soulful voice of Hamdan Al Abri, the jazz-influenced grooves of brothers Rony and Elie Afif, Jay Wud’s bluesy guitar, a Stax-style horn section and plenty of head-nodding attitude. Slydigs at The Music Room
Slydigs know what they like – Keith Richards’ swagger, Joe Strummer’s snarl, generally rocking out like it’s 1975 – and what they don’t; namely any kind of musical progress since that date. On their way up at home in the UK, the grassroots rockers have warmed up for the likes of Pete Doherty, Alabama 3 and the New York Dolls, while last month’s EP Down With The Mockery was produced by George Shilling, who’s worked on records by the likes of Slade and Primal Scream. Expect all the verve and irreverence of a rock and roll band utterly convinced of their calling, pursuing it with intent and abandon alike.
