He’s not a DJ known for stadium laser light shows, private jet indulgences or collaborations with Billboard rappers. He’s no longer flying high on Beatport, or topping DJ Mag’s Top 100 (as he did in 2001). But he remains one of the most influential house DJs on the planet. Put simply, he was there at the beginning.
Getting behind the decks for the first time at aged 15 – he’s now 47 – Diggers is a veritable dinosaur of the dance scene. It was underground then, America hadn’t caught on, EDM still stood for ‘event-driven marketing’ (probably). His big break came in ’93, when he was spotted by a chap called Alexander Coe – AKA techno/deep house pioneer Sasha.
In the years that followed Digweed gigged all over Europe and the US, hosting massive parties and helping define the fever evolving genre in its ’90 adolescence, while today’s rich-list toppers like Zedd, Axwell and Avicii were still in proverbial short pants.
Returning to the UAE for the first time in close to two years, following a storming set at Dubai’s Nasimi Beach in January 2013, Diggers gets behind the decks at O1ne Yas Island later tonight (Thursday September 11) to help the Abu Dhabi club launch a new season.
John Digweed performs at O1ne Yas Island tonight. Find out more here.
