David Guetta interview: New Year's Eve in Dubai

David Guetta chats Formula One racing, Martin Garrix rivalry and spending New Year's Eve in Dubai

Dubai is an incredibly popular destination for New Year’s Eve, how do you feel about being the soundtrack to the most memorable night of the year?
This is very incredible because I was in Dubai not a long time ago. I like the place a lot. I’m actually a resident in Dubai, people don’t know that but I am.
When I was in Dubai last time – which was not that long ago – two weeks ago, I was watching the craziest videos about New Year’s Eve in Dubai, it’s so insane. I’m super excited because I’ve done many incredible things for New Year’s Eve around the world but it was looking like something I’ve never seen before.

Fellow DJ Martin Garrix will be performing at Meydan on December 31 while you’re elsewhere in Dubai. Are you feeling competitive?
Actually we are very good friends and we were watching those videos together! We were in the studio together and we thought “wow”!
We felt stupid because we discovered this news together. We’ll have dinner together I guess.

Will you be spending much time in Dubai after the big event?

Unfortunately only one day, maybe two, but not much time in Dubai because I’m recording at the moment and I have a tour in Brazil.

How do you usually spend your time in Dubai?
I have young children, sometimes I bring them. It’s more of a quiet life. I know it sounds strange but because I’m always in clubs and festivals I’m a little more a chilled guy when I’m here.

Would you ever consider doing a nightclub residency here?
Ooh! That would be convenient but I don’t know if there’s a place that would be the equivalent of what I have in Vegas or Ibiza. If it exists of course that would be very convenient.

Do you ever go out to clubs here?
Not really, no. I go to restaurants. When I’m in Dubai I’m happy to wake up and walk on the beach or something like that.

The F1 Grand Prix Abu Dhabi takes place this weekend and you play a racing pro in your ‘Dangerous’ music video. Will you be following the action?
No I won’t be there. It would have been nice. Maybe I’ll watch on TV. It was a great experience doing the video and being able to get in the cars and drive. I had Romain Grosjean showing me how to take the curves and everything. It was fun.
