8 epic summer festivals for your calendar

It’s not all about Glastonbury. Take a trip to these massive festivals

1 Electric Daisy Carnival
Line-up includes: Afrojack, Andy C, Martin Garrix, Above & Beyond, Flux Pavilion, Camo & Krooked, Hardwell
This is one of the biggest festivals in the US when it comes to dance music, and there’s still time (just!) to get yourself to Las Vegas for a weekend of bass, neon paint, carnival rides and art installations. It’s pretty much an American Tomorrowland crossed with a very Vegas version of Coachella, but with EDM die-hards instead of Instagramming fashionistas.
Dhs1,570 (three-day pass). Jun 16-19. Las Vegas, US, lasvegas.electricdaisycarnival.com.

2 Dimensions Festival
Line-up includes: Grace Jones, Moderat, Yussef Kamaal, Theo Parrish, Gilles Peterson, Ata Kak, Floating Points
From the team behind Outlook, the much smaller Dimensions invites the biggest names from techno, house and beyond to perform over four days and nights in the jaw-dropping setting of the abandoned Fort Punta Christo in Pula, Croatia. With some of the best sound systems you’ll find anywhere, beaches, boat parties and solid sunshine, Dimensions is the perfect way to close your summer.
From Dhs1,050 (weekend plus camping). Aug 30 to Sep 3. Pula, Croatia, www.dimensionsfestival.com.

3 Kappa FuturFestival
Line-up includes: Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Paul Kalkbrenner, Sven Väth, Masters At Work, Dixon, Mano Le Tough
House and techno lovers looking to escape Ibiza or Berlin this summer should give Kappa FuturFestival in the northern Italian city of Turin a serious look. Running from noon to midnight over two days, FuturFestival takes place in an incredible old industrial site in the city centre, with the huge ironwork pylons of the Parco Dora providing the most appropriate setting possible for a line-up packed with a number of dance music legends. Book your tickets now.
From Dhs200 (day pass). Jul 8-9. Turin, Italy, www.kappafuturfestival.it.

4 Love International
Line-up includes: Axel Boman, Ben UFO, The Black Madonna, Craig Richards, Horse Meat Disco, Honey Soundsystem
Now in its second year with a powerful line-up of house, disco and techno’s finest selectors playing in one of the most beautiful festival locations around over seven days, the spirit of Garden looks safe in new custodians Team Love’s hands.
From Dhs70 (day pass), Dhs635 (eight days) Jun 28 to Jul 5. The Garden, Tisno, Croatia, loveinternationalfestival.com.

5 Melt!
Line-up includes: Bonobo, Die Antwoord, Dixon, Fatboy Slim, MIA, Glass Animals, Mo, Modeselektor, Sampha, Warpaint, Hercules and Love Affair
Melt! is a festival set in a former Soviet mining quarry two hours south of Berlin. Although techno is at its heart, with secret stages and all-night parties by the lake, there’s a good balance of leftfield mainstream acts taking centre stage throughout the weekend. For maximum party points travel intercity (from Amsterdam and stations throughout Germany) directly into the festival site aboard the MiXery Melt! Train, and let the good times roll.
From Dhs595 (weekend with camping). Jul 14-16. Ferropolis, Germany, www.meltfestival.de.

6 Secret Solstice
Line-up includes: Foo Fighters, The Prodigy, Richard Ashcroft, Rhye, Artwork, Dave, Novelist
Thanks to Björk and Sigur Rós, Iceland is becoming known for incredible music as well as breathtaking landscapes. One of its gems is Secret Solstice, which welcomes not only big-name artists but a bumper line-up of DJs and experimental electronic bands who’ll give you more than enough to go on till the sun goes down… which, thanks to the summer solstice weekend, is after a full three days of daylight.
From Dhs755 (without camping). Jun 15-18. Reykjavik, Iceland, www.secretsolstice.is.

7 Sonar
Line-up includes: DJ Shadow, Anderson .Paak, De La Soul, Eric Prydz, Nicolas Jaar, AJ Tracey, The Black Madonna, Benji B, Justice, Giggs
For three days every June, more than 100,000 people flock to Barcelona as Sonar takes over venues across the city for a three-day celebration of cutting-edge electronic music. Sonar by Day offers not just music, but also the Sonar+D digital creative conference for industry insiders, while Sonar by Night delivers massive night-long parties at the Fira Gran Via exhibition space.
From Dhs220 (day pass), Dhs295 (night pass). June 15-17. Barcelona, Spain, www.sonar.es.

8 Sziget

Line-up includes: Kasabian, Major Lazer, Flume, Interpol, Billy Talent, Two Door Cinema Club, Charli XCX, The Kills, Tom Odell, Clean Bandit, DJ Shadow, Jagwar Ma
Sziget is a seven-day fest of music madness with a diverse roster of rock and indie from all around the world – and the chance to hear new music outside of the usual circuit is very high. The fact you are partying on an actual island (Old Buda Island) helps to create the sense of a remote community, which add to the charm of this one. Now is as good a time as any to check it out if you’ve never experienced it before.
From Dhs1,220 (7 day pass with camping). com. August 9-16. Budapest, Hungary, www.szigetfestival.com.
