There surely can’t be a finer way to mark the end of the working day than by watching the sun set over the water. Yes, we know it’s hot out there, which is why we’ve rounded up some the best venues to witness this wonderful solar phenomenon from the safety of air-conditioned environs…
Pier 7 is bustling at sundown and you really can’t go far wrong with the pan-Asian venue that puts as much love into its food as it does its drinks. Even though it’s too sticky to sit outside, console yourself in the fact that you’re at a spot so good we named it our Bar of the Year in 2016.
Open Sat-Thu 4pm-2am; Fri noon-2am. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 276 5900).
This might seem an obvious pick, but if you’ve never seen the sun set from the world’s loftiest restaurant, you truly have never lived. The Lounge is as pretty as the vista, and though the prices can seem a little elevated, it’s worth splashing out here, for the chance to gawp out of the window.
Open daily 5.30pm-2am. Burj Khalifa, Downtown Dubai (04 888 3828).
BiCE Sky Bar
Its perch might not be as lofty as some of its rivals, but the views BiCE Sky Bar offers at sunset are no less appealing. With creative mixed beverages, live music and cracking seafood, this JBR haunt is intimate, charming and great for both couples and groups of friends.
Open daily 5pm-2.30am. Hilton Dubai Jumeirah, The Walk, JBR (04 318 2319).
Gold on 27
This Burj Al Arab offering lives up to its moniker with its décor but is doing its best to counteract the exclusivity of the hotel. Yes, it is fancy, but provided you don’t turn up in flip-flops, Gold on 27 welcomes you to sample its array of inventive mixed beverages as you gaze at the Arabian Gulf in a golden daze.
Open daily 6pm-2am. Burj Al Arab, Umm Suqeim (800 4653 6627).
Il Faro Trattoria & Lounge
While some are drawn here for the pizzas, it’s undoubtedly the views that will live longer in the memory. Offering panoramas of the Arabian Gulf, “The Lighthouse” is a quaint, Mediterranean-inspired joint whose lounge has the better vistas and a varied selection of bubbly and grape to accompany them with.
Open daily noon-midnight. Azure Residences, Palm Jumeirah (04 568 3137).

Despite a couple of iffy recent experiences, we still love The Observatory, which has one of the best vantage points for both views of the Palm Jumeirah and the setting sun. The daily “Power Hour” offers mixed drinks for Dhs25 from 7pm to 8pm, while the ladies’ night on Monday is a popular draw.
Open daily noon-1am. Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites, Dubai Marina (04 319 4795).
Given its name, you’d think Vault would dwell in the depths of the world’s tallest hotel. on the contrary, it takes pride of place on the 71st and 72nd floors, making it a top spot from which to look out on the city.
