Mariah Carey has joined Enrique Iglesias on the bill for the 15th anniversary Emirates Airline Jazz Festival.
The superstar will headline the second night of the three-day event, on February 23 at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre. A third stellar act, who will kick off the festival, is expected to be announced early next week.
A genuine legend, the New Yorker has not performed in the UAE for more than a decade. Since ending her Charmbracelet tour here in 2004, there have been several close calls, most notably in 2008 when tickets went on sale for a special weekend alongside Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie. However, a week after the announcement of the gigs, Midas Productions were forced to cancel a show that had expected to attract some 35,000 people paying up to Dhs3,900 each.
There are, though, to be no such problems this time around.
Best loved for power ballads like Without You, Hero and One Sweet Day, and the iconic All I Want For Christmas Is You, Carey, now aged 47, was at the pinnacle of her career at the turn of the century when she was honoured as best-selling recording artist of the 1990s.
She is now the third-biggest-selling female artist of all time, having sold 200 million records throughout a career which stretches back to the release of her self-titled debut album in 1988. On top of that, the singer can look back on five Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards, and 14 Billboard Music Awards.
Her The Sweet, Sweet Fantasy Tour is her first significant collection of shows outside her homeland in several years, and has taken in dates in Europe, Africa and Latin America. It coincides with the release of a greatest hits album.
Tickets for Mariah's show are on sale at www.ticketmaster.ae from Tuesday December 6 at midday, priced from Dhs395 (Regular) right up to Dhs1,595 (VIP Deck). Golden Circle (Dhs795) and Fan Pit (Dhs995) are also available.
