Fans of Arabic music, head over to ON42 at Media One Hotel on Thursday July 27 for the second instalment of the region’s first alternative Arabic music event, WASLA Arabic Alternative Music Festival’s Summer Sessions night.
Talent from across North Africa and the Middle East will be showcased across the evening, with the night kicking off with Speed Caravan, an alternative rock band from Algeria. The group modernise the oud and pair its sound with modern beats created by an electro technician, drummer and bass player. Speed Caravan have made a point of trying to change the perception of the oud, and this video shows the band’s brilliant take on Galvanize by The Chemical Brothers.
Next up are the UAE’s very own experimental electronica, rock and classic Arabic fusion quartet NOON, who merge down-tempo electronic and alternative oriental music to create a fusion sound unlike many others. Following on from Noon are Fulltone from Egypt. Fulltone combine fresh and funky house beats with classic Middle Eastern instruments to create some really smooth tones, as you can see in this behind-the-scenes video of the band.
After the live music stops, local and international DJs will take the party through to the early hours. Join WASLA to celebrate the region’s alternative Arabic music, combined with afro-rock, electro rhythms and Arabic fusion. Tickets can be bought online for Dhs100 from Platinum List, or Dhs120 on the door.
From Dhs100. Thu Jul 27, 8pm-3am. ON42, Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City, www.platinumlist.net
