The Irish Village has announced the arrival of Soul Jam, the jazz, soul and R’n’B festival, taking place on Thursday October 5.
This autumn is jam packed full with some of the biggest musical names Dubai has ever seen, from Ed Sheeran to Elton John, Gorillaz and prog rock legends Dream Theater. With some absolutely brilliant bands coming to town, something a little bit more chilled might be necessary – enter Soul Jam, a night of funky tunes, smooth beats and some chilled jazz.
At the top of the bill this year sits soul legend Alexander O’Neal, the ’80s soul sensation with arguably his biggest hit Criticize recently re-entering the UK single charts 30 years after its release. O’Neal was signed by Prince back in the late 1980s, and his debut album Hearsay went triple platinum. Other hits include If You Were Here Tonight, and Never Knew Love Like This.
Supporting Alexander O’Neal is British funk and soul sensation Omar, who released this ultra-smooth classic:
Beyond There’s Nothing Like This, with the album of the same name released in 1990, Omar has been regularly recording, working with artists including Stevie Wonder, and this year released his eighth studio album. Fun fact: Omar also appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the UK.
Also on the bill is Jackie Graham, the ’80s soul singing sensation, who reached chart success in 1985 with Could It Be I’m Falling in Love, alongside David Grant, reaching number five in the charts. She also found massive success in the US, topping the billboard dance charts for five weeks in 1994 with a cover of Chaka Khan’s Ain’t Nobody.
Completing the line-up is Mica Paris, who found success in 1988 with her platinum-selling debut album So Good, from which she found her first top ten hit with My One Temptation. Paris returned to the studio this year to release a special record dedicated to the 100th birthday of soul legend Ella Fitzgerald – Mica Sings Ella.
