Best sports bar in Dubai 2018

Nightlife Awards 2018

WINNER
The Underground

A quality sports bar with more screens than you can shake a stick at

It might not be the most extravagant bar you’ll find in Dubai – far from it – but The Underground is a fantastic sports bar (the best, as far as we’re concerned), with an inimitable charm.

It’s based on the London Underground, but despite its incongruous theme, this suitably-named underground spot in JBR is a mainstay on the scene, and is an unequivocally brilliant place to catch any game that happens to be on.

There are a plethora of TV screens dotted about (more than 20, if we’re using real numbers), and that includes a giant projector, and at least three oversized TVs. If you can’t see your match, staff are more than happy to find your game and a dedicated screen to watch it on.

This place is packed on a Saturday night as the Premier League gets ready to kick off, and rightly so. Not only are the sporting options top-notch, but there’s a decent happy hour that offers discounted drinks until 8pm, and some epic pub grub (get the toad in the hole, it’s magnificent).

You’ll find us there most weeks, come and join us. You’ll soon realise why we love The Underground.
Open daily noon-3am. Habtoor Grand Resort, Autograph Collection, JBR (04 408 4257)

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Barasti
A beach bar-meets-sports bar with a giant screen, and more inside

You’ll remember if you’ve been to Barasti before, possibly because you recall its piercingly bright, enormous TV screen.

Comfortably capable of broadcasting the big match to hundreds of sports fans, Barasti is defined by that screen. But it’s not the only reason why this bar has bagged itself a place as a Highly Commended.

You’ll hear us effuse over the virtues of this beach bar, seaside hangout and party hotspot in latter categories of this guide. But if you head inside on the main deck area, you’ll be greeted by a number of other decent sized screens, so if your team isn’t on the big one, you can still kick back, grab a pint and cheer on the lads (or lasses).
Open Sat-Wed 10am-1am, Thu-Fri 10am-2.30am. Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street (04 318 1313).

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Mcgettigan’s JLT
A brilliant Irish bar fit for every sporting occassion

What is it about Irish pubs making great sports bars? This popular haunt in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has so many screens you’ll barely know where to look.

Generously sized TV screens line your every step at this bar, whether you’re inside, loitering around the circular bar, playing a spot of pool, chilling out in The Baggot annex function room, down in the thick of it by the stage area, or sitting in the sprawling terrace/garden area.

Great for kick-off (for Premier League fans), but McGettigan’s also excels in rugby and, rightly so, prioritises Irish sporting endeavours beyond all others.

We’ll see you there.
Open daily noon-3am. Bonnington Hotel, Cluster J, Jumeirah Lakes Towers (04 378 0800).

SHORTLISTED
Bidi Bondi
If you’re after some sports on the Palm, then this Aussie-themed sports bar will do the trick. Home to a decent brekkie, burgers and some massive TV screens showing the match, you won’t miss a minute of the action here.
Open Sat-Wed 10am-midnight; Thu-Fri 10am-1am. Palm Jumeirah (04 427 0515).

Bridgewater Tavern
This cool and easy-going sports bar in Business Bay is a super chilled-out place to watch the match. With charm and TVs in equal measure, you’re bound to find a cracking spot to go alongside your tasty pub grub.
Open daily 4pm-2am. JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, Business Bay (04 414 3000).

Cook hall
It claims to be Dubai’s first American gastropub with two bars, pub sports and screens showing the latest game.
Open daily 5pm-2am. The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City (04 435 5555).

Crown & Lion
This is a seriously blokey pub. It’s English, it’s unashamed, it’s smokey, and it’s utterly rammed when it comes to kick-off. There’s also a decent quiz.
Open daily 11am-3am. Byblos Hotel, Barsha Heights (04 448 8000).

garden on 8
Following a revamp, this bar boasts tonnes of TV screens, both indoors and outdoors. There are picnic tables outside in the terrace garden, plus a massive screen.
Open Sun-Wed noon-midnight; Thu-Sat noon-3am. Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City (04 427 1000).

Kickers
A laid-back hangout with foosball and pool tables, plus plenty of TVs showing the latest sporting action.
Open Sun-Wed 1pm-2am; Thu-Sat noon-2am. Football Zone, Sports Village, Dubai Sports City (04 448 1001).

The Dubliner’s
This is a proper Irish bar, with all the nooks and crannies you’d expect, and it’s home of Celtic supporters, so really hots up on match days. It’s a longstanding pub on the Dubai nightlife scene and is worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Open daily noon-2am. Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Garhoud (04 702 2455).
