Win free classes at Barry’s Bootcamp, 27 Sep 2018 12:02:22 +0400When we hear the word “bootcamp,” we think excruciating exercise drills, buckets of sweat and way too many push-ups. That’s still nothing compared to the exhaustion we experienced at Barry’s Bootcamp.

It isn’t labelled “the best workout in the world” for any old reason, as this gym put us through an hour-long high-intensity session from LA-based celebrity trainer Barry Jay - burning 1,000 calories through the hour-long session, and boosting your metabolism so you continue to burn calories long after the class has finished

Split into two groups, you’ll switch between cardio and weight training throughout the 60 minutes, leaving you breathless after interval sprints on an incline and your biceps, triceps and abs burning with each rep.

It’s an experience that everyone in Dubai should try at least once. That’s why the Time Out Dubai team went along to Barry’s Bootcamp in Dubai Marina, and went up against the battalion of class instructors. All in the name of bringing you another episode of Time Out Dubai Vlogs, our weekly YouTube series.

Guess what? You can try the workout of a lifetime as well by entering this week’s competition. All you have to do to nab yourself a free session is comment on the below video and subscribe to the Time Out Dubai YouTube channel. It’s that easy.

Enjoy an Irish breakfast with the Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov fight, 26 Sep 2018 10:31:30 +0400Arguably UFC’s biggest star Conor McGregor and the undefeated Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov are going head-to-head over in Las Vegas, and you can watch it all go down right here in Dubai.

On Sunday October 7, McGettigan’s JLT will be opening up bright and early for one of the biggest fights in UFC history, and you even have a hefty breakfast buffet while you watch it.

For Dhs79, UFC fans can tuck into the Irish bar’s list of breakfast trimmings, including sausages, hash browns, scrambled egg, black pudding and just about everything to make up a full Irish breakfast – the perfect meal to have if you’re rooting for McGregor.

Showing across McGettigan’s JLT’s multiple screens and its giant main screen, UFC 299 will see the “The Notorious” Irish fighter return to the octagon ring in his first UFC fight since 2016, all to take back the title of Lightweight Champion.

It’ll be tough though, as current title holder Khabib Nurmagomedov has gone through 26 professional matches in the ring, and hasn’t lost a single one of them.

The prize purse is expected to be the biggest in UFC history, so needless to say, there’s quite a lot of hype.

If it’s anything like Mayweather v McGregor like last year, we’re in for a whopper of a fight.

Spaces for the event are on a first come, first served basis so if you’re looking for front row seats, set that alarm clock back a little more. The early bird gets the table, after all.

Looking for an even bigger screen? The big fight will also be showing live at Reel Cinemas at Dubai Marina Mall and The Dubai Mall at 4am.

The Irish Village will also be screening the match live from 6am to 10am.
Whichever place you choose, be prepared for a thrilling match.
Free entry, Dhs79 (breakfast buffet). Sun Oct 7, 6am-10am. Next to Bonnington Hotel, JLT, Cluster J, JLT, (04 356 0560).

Volunteer for the largest AFC Asian cup in history, 20 Sep 2018 12:14:19 +0400With just under four months until the AFC Asian Cup 2019 kicks off in the UAE the hunt is on for the last few lucky volunteers.

Thousands have already signed up to be a part of the second-oldest continental football tournament in history and time is quickly running out to fill the last of 5,000 spots.

There are numerous different roles for the world’s largest-ever Asian cup, but the rising popularity for volunteering in sports tournaments means competition is tight.

Taking place from Saturday January 5, 2019, to Friday February 1, 2019, Asia’s top 24 nations will be playing 51 matches in eight stadiums across four host cities Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai and Sharjah.

General Secretary of the AFC, Dato’ Windsor John, said, “Volunteers are the heart and soul of every major sporting event.

“They are the real heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes, so our football stars can focus on producing their best on the pitch.”

Tournament director, His Excellency Aref Hamed Al Awani, added, “For anyone living in the region, this is a truly unique opportunity as our volunteers won’t just witness sporting history, they’ll be a part of it.”

Among the already listed volunteers are Emirati ex-professional footballer Ahmed Al Balooshi, Jessica Cullen, a prodigious 15-year-old Australian, and Japanese super-fan Shinya Nakamura.

The volunteering process is an easy four step procedure. Step one: sign up. Step 2: complete a small interview. Step 3: go through training. And, step 4: enjoy and be part of the fun. The only major requirement is that you are over the age of 16.

Month-long fitness programme comes to Dubai, and it’s free, 18 Sep 2018 09:58:23 +0400There’s a brand-new fitness challenge in town, only this one comes with a twist. If you can commit for a month, stick to the training and meal plans, and lose your target amount of weight, the whole thing is absolutely free.

The Original 6-in-4 Challenge is being launched next month by Best Body Co, a start-up fitness company run by husband and wife personal training dream team Olivia and Adam McCubbin. The challenge is simple, in theory: lose 6kg in four weeks.

There is a bit of a catch, in that the upfront cost is Dhs999. However, if you can stick to your five-times-a-week training sessions, meal plans, and generally being disciplined for 28 days, you’ll get your money back if you manage to shed 6kg or more.

Applications are open at the moment, so head over to and complete the registration process (it’s free). You’ll need to input your details, including height and weight. You’ll then be invited for a screening by Best Body Co, where they’ll find out how suited you are for the programme.

If you’re a good fit, you’ll be invited to take part, at which point you’ll pay the Dhs999. Olivia McCubbin, co-founder and head coach at Best Body Co, says it’s all about motivation.

“Studies have shown that people are more emotionally invested and committed to achieving their health and fitness goals when they actually pay for it,” she says. “We want our members to commit themselves fully to getting the best results in our 6-in-4 Challenge. That’s why we want them to commit to paying Dhs999 up front to secure their place. Think of it as a deposit that you’re paying to get in shape, and use it to help motivate you.”

To get you to your goal, you’ll head to five training classes a week – with the option of two sessions daily, one in the morning at DIFC, and the other after work in Al Quoz. That’s 20 classes in total during the programme – working out to less than Dhs50 per class.

You’ll also get personalised meal plans, education on healthy, sustainable weight loss, body fat analysis and a personal weigh in, at-home and travel work out plans (in case you can’t make a class), healthy recipes, direct access to your personal trainers and a range of discounts on various fitness brands.

This cycle of the 6-in-4 Challenge runs from Saturday October 6 to Friday November 2, and registrations are open until Friday September 28. More are planned for the future, but dates for the second cycle are yet to be confirmed.
Dhs999 (or free). Register by Fri Sep 28.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to launch in Dubai; a fast-paced and dynamic city where studio fitness is booming. We are excited to bring a completely different model to the market that we think is best for both consumers and studio partners," said Fritz Lanman, CEO of ClassPass.

“Our Dubai membership will be underpinned by ClassPass’ long-standing proposition of variety, flexibility and value, while our objective is to provide Dubai’s residents with entry routes into the highest-level of premium gyms and studios in the city."

TEPFactor Dubai: Quick guide to the adventure centre, 11 Sep 2018 11:07:28 +04001 An international maze of mystery
Many attractions either aspire to be, or compare themselves to, a new version of classic TV show The Crystal Maze. TEPfactor, a recently-opened attraction just off The Walk in JBR, may be of a similar ilk, but it doesn’t try to take advantage of nostalgia. Nor does it need to, TEPfactor is a brilliantly original escape room-meets-adventure challenge concept that will test your wits, skill and athleticism in a series of brainteasers, obstacles and more.

2 Where did you come from?
A Croatian import, Dubai is the third TEPfactor location, with the creative minds behind the project saying that the attraction is inspired by the aforementioned TV show, as well as international TV franchise Fort Boyard. But if you’ve not heard of either of those shows, what are you letting yourself in for when you spend an afternoon tackling its 21 different and intriguing challenges?

3 I work out!
Be prepared to break a sweat. A stroll in the park, this is not, so get your trainers on, don your gym shorts and stretch thoroughly before you get going. We’re only slightly joking, too, because each room is based on one of four broad categories: fitness, patience, logic and skill. Think tyre swings, rope climbs, agility tests and a range of other clambering-related conundrums that will have you simultaneously sweating and head-scratching. Don’t worry, they serve water and energy drinks on site – and you’ll need them.

4  Your brain will get a workout, too...
It’s not just a physical challenge, your brain will be getting a sweat on as well. When we checked out TEPfactor, we became obsessed with some of the fiendishly tricky brainteasers that are dotted around. For some of the challenges, someone in your team (and teams of four people are ideal) will need to be good at spatial visualisation to solve some of the puzzles, while a steady hand is essential for solving some of the nerve-wracking tests.

5 Gotta solve ’em all!
Because how else will you reach the final puzzle if you don’t complete the first 20? When you finish four puzzles in one of the categories, you’ll have to work out the code to unlock the door to the fifth and final puzzle in that section. Of course, said final challenge is usually the hardest. However, once you complete the category, you’ll be given a mysterious code word. Get a clue for each of your four categories, then attempt to solve the final challenge, the solution to which is the word that connects all four of your clues. In a very public setting (the final challenge is in a cage in the middle of the lobby), you’ll enter your solution, and if you’re a winner, you’ll be greeted with a prize for each team member, and a whole host of applause and cheering from other players in the foyer. A bit awkward if it doens’t go as planned.

6 Avoid red...
... and focus on blue. That’s the final piece of advice you’re given before you begin your game. While that’s not necessarily relevant for every room, you’ll quickly understand what it means when you accidentally land on the red floor boards dotted around. A misplaced step in many of the missions will mean you’ve got to restart, and it’s a fairly unsubtle sound that kindly informs you that you’ve failed. The klaxon sound booming out through the room every time you do so (and believe us, you will, because these can be really tough), will politely accompany you through your following night’s sleep... incessantly.

7 Avoid the klaxon of disappointment
That’s our term for it, not theirs. We’ve already said that you’ll hear this on your visit, but we’re fairly sure we were exceptionally woeful when we gave TEPfactor a shot, so we heard this sound an awful lot during our time. Be patient, and don’t get stressed out, that’s the fast--track to being a massive TEPloser.

8 Think outside the box
The key to a lot of the games is thinking creatively about how to solve the puzzle that lies before you – for example when you find nothing but a metal pyramid protruding from the floor, or when you have to make your way through a Narnia-esque wardrobe and into nothing but utter darkness. There’s always more to this game than meets the eye and, as the category name suggests, patience is absolutely key. If you’d swear that your way is right but that the system isn’t working, you’re wrong. Process of elimination is part of the fun, so change your approach and go again.

7 Expect to find random bruises
Bruise like a peach? After our visit the Team Time Out contestants were finding random scrapes, knocks and bruises for days. Oh, and be mindful when you’re playing the football skill game, that can be a shin destroyer if you’re not careful.

8 But most of all...
Have fun. This is one of the most unique days out in Dubai, and while you might need between three and four hours to make your way round every obstacle, when you’re reflecting on your game while on your way home, you’ll be yearning for more levels to take on...
Dhs80 per hour (weekdays), Dhs100 per hour (weekends).Open Sun-Wed 10am-midnight, Thu-Fri 10am-1am. The Walk, JBR (04 398 8438).

Final challenge, with all of your hard work leading to one conundrum to end it all. Can you do it?

The number of challenge categories throughout the adventure course: fitness, skill, patience and logic.

The ideal number of people to take in your team – four’s probably best for you to win.

There are 21 challenges for you to conquer at the brand-new attraction found in JBR.

A gigantic inflatable obstacle course is making its way to Dubai, 09 Sep 2018 10:33:50 +0400Ready to go through what might be the bounciest obstacle course in Dubai? Inflatathon is making its way to Dubai, and it invites everyone to have fun and get fit at the same time.

Taking place at Safa Park on Friday November 23, the event organised by the Dubai Sports Council will feature a host of activities based around everything bouncy, along with an after party with a live DJ and food trucks.

Early bird tickets for the event are now on sale until Thursday September 27, going from Dhs160 for standard entry and Dhs240 for a family ticket which includes one adult and one child. After that, it’s back to normal prices.

The four-kilometre course consists of ten huge obstacles that contestants bounce their way through, including the Himalayas, a set of steep slopes spread across 25m and a challenge where participants jump from hole-to-hole to make it through.

Another mountain-inspired obstacle includes Everest, a seven-metre high course that will take some time to get over, along with The Equalizer, featuring a daring jump to finish off the course.

While the main focus of the inflatable obstacle course is pure fun, there is a series of heats for those who fancy a bit of competition.

These include the “Inflatables Heat” where participants get dressed as either T-Rex or a sumo and try to make their way through the course in hilarious-style, along with the “Family Heat” where teens and adults cooperate to get around.

If you’re not a fan of bouncing and being hurled around, next to the course will be The Village, which includes a small children’s area to keep little ones entertained, along with a mini-food truck park for the foodies.

“We are excited to be launching a new obstacle course experience in the region. We hope to see people of all ages and from all walks of life across Dubai out in force and enjoying this hugely entertaining event," said Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council H.E Saeed Hareb.

“Our goal is to provide the community with opportunities to engage with sport and live a healthy lifestyle. This is a unique way to get active and have fun at the same time.”

To finish off, Inflatathon will even have a festival style after party at the Village with a stage and live DJ, so you can instead bounce around to the beat of the music.

Standard tickets are priced at Dhs200 per person, while VIP entry for Dhs400 includes entry to the Inflatable heat, a T-Rex or a sumo inflatable suit, Inflatathon merchandise including a Snapback cap or top along with deserving finisher medal.

You can check out what kind of obstacles you’re up against and register over at

November will also see the return of the Color Run with its first Hero Tour, along with a fun Hello Kitty Run in December.
