Ramadan 2018: Where to hear iftar cannons around Dubai

The historic tradition has been around for centuries

Every year in Dubai, cannons are fired to mark the start of iftar – and six of them have been set up for 2018.

This May and June throughout Ramadan, you can hear them each day in new locations, with cannons installed in City Walk and Madinat Jumeirah.

They will also be set up in Deira prayer grounds, near Al Mamzar Park, Karama prayer grounds, Jumeirah Beach Residence and the Burj Khalifa.

People of determination and the elderly will be taking part in the firing of the cannons, which have a sound range of 170 decibels and can be heard from 10km away.

Once fired, you’ll need to get yourself down for an iftar, which Dubai has a wide range of all over the city.

And if you're looking for more information about Ramadan, everything you need to know is right here.

At sunset during the fasting month, Dubai Police will set off cannons to let people know that it’s time to break fast.

There are apps to let you know this now, but this sound tradition has taken on a more symbolic role.
