Imagine. Throwing back handfuls of Portuguese bites from a Michelin-starred chef while lounging on a cabana in the glorious sunshine.

It sounds like something from a holiday brochure, but you need go no further than Jumeira to fill your face (and your Instagram feed) while topping up your tan at the brand-new Portuguese restaurant from José Avillez.

The chef has 19 restaurants under his belt and Tasca in the new Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai is his first international venture.

We went down to Tasca to meet with Avillez and have a nosy around (more on that in the new issue of Time Out Dubai, on sale today), and were pleasantly surprised with our findings.

The dining room sits on the sixth floor of the low-rise hotel, with vistas of the Downtown Dubai skyline on one side and views of the sprawling Arabian Gulf on the other – once you look past the restaurant’s pool, that is.

The space certainly lends itself to frivolity, with a huge open kitchen, clean wooden interiors and a laid back attitude that makes you feel like you could well be in Europe.

“We wanted it to feel relaxed and a place where people can come to spend hours with family and friends,” Avillez told Time Out Dubai.

“I first visited when they were laying the foundations of the hotel, so it’s been a long journey but I couldn’t be happier with the way it’s turned out and we’re really happy to be opening here in the city.

“I think that’s why it’s a very special market because there are a lot of openings and closing and economically it goes up and down. You really need to deliver high quality and consistency to succeed here.”

The menu leans heavily towards the ocean, with the likes of tuna tartare, fish and an array of shellfish (look out for the grilled scarlet shrimp), styled in a small plates and sharing arrangement.

Also open in the hotel is Nobu- and Zuma- trained Ross Shonhan, who is opening Japanese steakhouse Netsu downstairs.

We’re spoiled for choice…
Open daily noon-3.3-pm, 6.30pm-11.30pm. Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Jumeira (04 777 2231).
