Cinnabon, Deira City Centre

Sticky sweets and tasty treats at this shopping mall snack stop

Time Out Says

You may not easily see Cinnabon; it is tiny and has only 14 seats. But you will certainly be drawn to it by the fabulous cinnamon-tastic aroma it emits. Sandwiched in between Costa Coffee and Haagen-Dazs, just opposite Cinestar in City Centre, this is a must for a totally unconventional afternoon tea. The décor is minimalist, but there is plenty to see in the open plan kitchen behind a tall glass shield.

We perched at one of the high tables for two, jammed right up to the wall, from where we got a great view of the action; chefs in bright blue polo shirts, baseball caps and plastic aprons weighing, kneading, rolling and slicing. There is no soothing tea lounge music; just the busy din of the miniscule production kitchen, punctuated with buzzing timers as each fragrant batch of Cinnabons exits the oven. There are no dainty cucumber sandwiches on offer here; the choice is one of cinnamon buns or pecan buns; in giant format or ‘minibon’ size. This American interpretation of the Chelsea bun with masses of cinnamon and sugar, drenched in caramel or cream is sheer indulgence. There are no silver teapots here, nor fine bone china teacups because paper cups and plates and plastic cutlery are the order of the day.

The coffee comes from the Seattle Coffee Company, tea is the ‘teabag in a paper mug’ variety. This tiny venue is always buzzing, and does a huge take away trade too. The simplicity of the concept is its greatest selling point, you know exactly what you are getting, the product is delicious and there is no pretension. We will be back.
