Time Out Says

For some reason this city isn’t swarming with good quality Mexican restaurants that are worthy of your attention. This one, though, is something of a gem – because who doesn’t love beachside dining, sprawling terraces and live music to accompany a quesadilla?

Maya, found at Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa in JBR, ticks many of the boxes required for a Mexican night out good enough to knock the stuffing out of a piñata. It’s right next to the beach, it sits on the hotel’s impressively vast garden, it covers multiple floors, it has good live music and a bunch of exciting dishes to dig into.

Start with your choice of ceviche – with the sesame seed-crusted tuna with a quinoa salad and mole vinaigrette worthy of your attention. Not a raw fan? The antojitos menu (which literally translates to “little craving”) has some fantastic options on it, too.

The fully-loaded Maya nachos are a highlight and the veggie quesadilla is a cracker, stuffed with salsa, chilli, cheese and squash blossom.

Tacos are wonderfully munchable, while the fajitas come with a sizzling tray of tender chicken and flavoursome veg. It’s all excellent, but should be for the price tag, which is steep for street food.

Whether you’re a meat eater, pescetarian, vegan, coeliac or anything in between you’ll find something to love here.
