Moombai & Co Cafe & Bar
Time Out Says
We dine on a weeknight and the small space is jam-packed. Billed as a “modern Parsi café, featuring all of Aunty’s favourite Indian dishes”, the menu is cool and authentic (with some helpful explanations, too).
Take the advice of the staff, all of whom are friendly and knowledgeable about the extensive menu, and you won’t go far wrong when dining here.
We start off with the traditional street food pao bhaji – buttered bread buns with a serving of a vegetable curry. We eagerly pile the flavoursome curry into the buns, mopping up any that spills out. It’s delicious, and we’d happily eat it all night.
A generous portion of tareli kolmi (Parsi fried prawns) are tasty and spicy, too.
We take a breather (dishes are substantial) and then dig into mains. Aunty’s bhuna gosht comes in a rich gravy with tender chunks of lamb falling apart wonderfully. We pair it with a chicken berry biryani. It’s not as sweet as we expect, with the berries adding a welcome sharpness to the delicately spiced rice. It’s tasty, but the chicken is a tad bony.
This quirky eatery aims to maintain the legacy of 1950s Parsi cafés and the décor reflects this, with ceiling fans, exposed brick and a kitsch but cool smattering of memorabilia from Mumbai.
At points the wait staff burst out with drums and break into bouts of dance.
“It’s like visiting your aunty’s house where everyone is welcome and no one leaves hungry,” say the team behind it. And they’re right. It’s fun, it’s lively and we leave with full bellies and massive smiles. We’re sure you will too.
