Time Out Says
For a foray back in time, you can’t do better than the QE2, the iconic vessel now berthed in Port Rashid after a life transporting passengers across the high seas.
The ship-turned-hotel won’t be for everyone – for each person who loves the nostalgia there’ll be someone who complains about it being dated. But if you fall in the former camp, then afternoon tea aboard the world-famous vessel should be on your to-do list.
The afternoon tea is now served on the Quarter Deck, with a line of tables looking out towards the docks – with the Dubai skyline and Burj Khalifa in the background.
It feels like an occasion, with clinking china and a mix of guests – from families to couples.
This is a ritual not to be messed with, and we’re presented with a tiered stand of carefully cut sandwiches and miniature cakes.
Favourites include the cucumber cream cheese, which is coated with finely chopped slices of the vegetable, as well as the delicate macarons. Other classics include smoked salmon, roast chicken with Pommery mustard and egg mayo with watercress.
The scones are a little bit crusty, but they pass the test when coated in a thick spread of clotted cream and jam.
Service is a little haphazard, but for a unique experience with a retro twist, it’s worth boarding the ship for, especially when you have cruise ship fans in town.
Dhs195. Thu, Fri, Sat 3pm-5pm.
