Akiba Dori

Bright and funky Japanese spot in d3

Time Out Says

Never has a venue and a location been more perfectly matched. Akiba Dori is a funky Japanese space in d3 that is exactly what the area needs.

The small, bright space is split into four different areas (a coffee shop, a pizzeria, a bar and a retro games arcade) that all run into each other. It certainly looks the part, but as we settle the bill the phrase “style over substance” is running through our heads.

First impressions are good, and service is spot on but we’re not sure the food we eat represents great value for money. A plate of calamari – in light crunchy batter and with a lime mayo – is tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary and Dhs47 seems steep.

Likewise, a bowl of yaki soba (which at Dhs57 seemed better value than udon for Dhs77) is decent, but nothing more.

Our favourite plate is spicy tuna maki. The six, freshly made, generously sized rolls are made with top ingredients. They’re also Dhs47 and are absolutely worth it.

The Tokyo-style pizzas may have been better options and certainly sound tasty, but will we be back to try them out? If we’re in d3 already, perhaps, for this is not an unpleasant experience, just a little underwhelming.

The bottom line
Worth checking out if you’re near.
