Time Out Says

We’re a bit spoiled here in Dubai when it comes to skyline views. And for those a bit longer in the tooth, you may need something really jaw-dropping to knock your socks off – and that’s where Akira Back comes in.

The newly-opened Japanese restaurant in W Dubai – The Palm is perfectly situated with huge floor-to-ceiling windows and a sprawling terrace lending views across the Palm and back over still waters to Dubai Marina, and at night it’s mesmerising.

The dining room is stripped back with a sort of industrial stance, yet plush leather booths and interactive art give it a modern feel.

The restaurant is the first in the UAE from professional snowboarder-turned-Michelin starred-chef Akira Back, who lives and works in Las Vegas, and it has his stamp all over.

From the glowing tunnel that leads into the restaurant, to his mother’s art adorning the walls, right down to the crockery that literally bears his name, this restaurant is cool, sophisticated and slick.

And that transcends to the menu. The dishes are split into hot and cold plates, sushi rolls, a robata grill and some salads and sharing options and feature famous signature dishes including the tuna pizza.

There’s also a dedicated vegan menu featuring the likes of edamame risotto, Beyond Meat tacos and roasted cauliflower.

To start we opt for the aforementioned tuna pizza, which is as far removed from the Italian pie as you can imagine. A crisp cracker-like base is slathered with a tangy sauce and topped with a layer of raw tuna, before being drizzled with truffle oil. You also have the option to add truffle shavings, but beware, it will set you back another Dhs50, which is unexpected (but stated on the menu on post-bill inspection).

A Horenzo Shira AE (a tofu and seaweed salad) is delicious, packed with fresh vegetables and garnished with refreshing pomegranate seeds.

Onto the mains and a miso-marinated black cod that arrives with an alarming cloud of white foam, which is probably more to hide the meager chunk of fish than anything else. Portion size aside, the dish is excellent, and the flaky cod is packed full of flavour and a bit crisp around the edges – just how we like it.

It’s a bit on the pricey side, but if you’re after something special–in terms of food and atmosphere – then you really can’t get much better than this.

Will be be Back? Absolutely.
