With a set-up that mimics a 1960s fishing harbour eatery, the rustic venue offers a real look into what dining would have been like back in the day.
Al Fanar is known for its breakfast, so we try the tomato-scrambled eggs, which come with a choice of two Emirati breads. Reqaq, the thin, wafer-like version can be eaten on its own or with another dish, and has a soft, mildly sugary flavour that doesn’t overshadow whatever you’re having it with.
Being in a seafood market, we also had to go for the fresh catches. The squid, which is so often got wrong, Al Fanar nails – it’s giant and charred to perfection.
It’s only fair to follow such a meal with some dessert, so we go for the luqaimat. They’re made fresh, but lack sweetness, even with the drizzle of date syrup, which is disappointing after the highs that came before.
The karak, however, an exotic Indian black tea that’s made with milk and a blend of spices, is as refreshing and balanced as a sip of sunshine.
If you’re looking to try Emirati food and really get a taste of the culture, especially the way it was before modernity kicked in, Al Fanar is a really good place to do so.
