Arjee Bhajee

British-style curry house serving up expat favourites at favourable prices

Time Out Says

The third Indian restaurant to arrive on the Palm in the past year (hello, Little Miss India and Khyber), Arjee Bhajee is flying the flag for the more casual experience. Curry and a pint in your jeans and T-shirt? Head here and you’ll not be disappointed.

Arjee Bhajee promises “traditional flavours and dishes, combined with a British twist”, and so, mouths watering at the thought of a “proper” chicken tikka masala, we make our visit.

The restaurant is located close to the heaving Club Vista Mare, so in comparison seems quiet (and certainly no argy bargies on our visit, thankfully).

Billed as a “funky space, [with] vibrant décor and a fun atmosphere”, indoors is all bright greens and pinks, while the terrace boasts white picket fencing. Arjee Bhajee’s logo – a British bulldog – is proudly displayed throughout.

We take a seat outside and nibble poppadoms and chutneys (on the house – a nice touch) while we peruse the menu, which stars such classics as butter chicken, kormas and vindaloos.

There’s a special bhaji menu and we kick off with a sweet potato version. It’s crispy and not at all greasy.

We move on to a mixed grill and that much-anticipated tikka masala. Mountains of food arrive (portions are huge, but not too rich or heavy) and we dig in.

Grilled lamb, chicken and prawns are well cooked, and the curry is fragrant and tasty. We love the saag aloo, where tender spinach and large chunks of potato swim in a wonderfully garlicky sauce.

Despite the generous portions, the menu is extremely reasonably priced, as are the house drinks at Dhs32.

If you’re looking for a good British curry at prices that won’t break the bank, you’d do worse than a trip to Arjee Bhajee.
