Time Out Says
For creating an atmosphere, influence doesn’t get more powerful than that of legendary Hindi singer and actress Asha Bhosle. The star, now 82, was born in western India, and her heritage and achievement are washed all over this classical restaurant; quotes and images on the menu, art work on the walls, and furnishings taken directly from the regions in which she grew up. Food draws on the flavours of the north, but is most comfortable in churning out “common” Indian dishes to a good standard; it really is a something-for-everyone outlet. That’s not say what is served isn’t impressive – in particular the Goan chicken curry and Muscat gosht. Considering its location in a mall, Asha’s has done a stellar job of removing you from the hustle and bustle created by frantic shoppers, and transported you to a quaint little refuge. The feeling of escape is juxtaposed against that unambitious selection of main dishes; precious little jumps out as being original or different – perhaps, after all, the restaurant does feel a little hamstrung by location. A wide range of lassies as well as the fact vegetarian main options outstrip those on offer containing meat, shows a deeper knowledge of traditional Indian meal time. Ultimately, though, the strength of Asha’s is in its reliability – much like an owner with 60-plus years in showbiz.
