Time Out Says

After hearing that this stalwart of Dubai’s Indian cuisine scene was to be given its second makeover in three years, we were intrigued to find out not only what it looked like but also what was cooking in new chef Vipin Kala’s kitchen.

As its fans will doubtless know, Ashiana means “beautiful home” and it certainly feels as if you’ve strolled into a salubrious colonial-era villa. But while the furnishings might be plush, there is a definite cosy charm to this place, with the jovial staff welcoming you as if you’re a long-lost friend.

Chef Vipin’s menu draws upon culinary traditions from across India and we order one of the signature dishes, the tandoori mutton chaap. Encrusted in pistachio, the lamb chops are a triumph, thanks to the special spice rub and the care taken in preparation (NB. this wasn’t mutton dressed as lamb). The raw mango accompaniment is also a big hit.

While the live band continues their entertaining set, we tuck into the Chettinad prawns, which although unspectacular, are a hearty supporting act to the excellent lamb. As for the desserts, the gulabi gulab (rose cheesecake stuffed with gulab jamun) is the best of the bunch.

The bottom line
A new look, but it still feels like home.
