Time Out Says
Well, yes. Good point, well made. Barasti has been around longer than most of Dubai, and is celebrating its 21st anniversary later this month. Because of that, it’s famous among Dubai residents – we’re almost certain they’ve all been there at least once, and if not, why not? You’re missing out. It’s also famous around the world, often making lists of the world’s best beach bars over the years.
Wait, it’s only 21 years old? I just assumed it had been there forever…
Nope. It first opened its doors in 1995, when it was just a small shack right next to Dubai International Marine Club. It was named after the wooden houses that the Bedouin lived in for the summer months. Since then, it has grown to become almost unrecognisable. It had a swimming pool for a while, but that’s long since been built over. Now, it’s spread out over two levels (or three, if you count the rooftop bar), and sees thousands of people visit every weekend.
So what goes on at Barasti?
It depends when you go. If you’re there during a football tournament such as the World Cup or the Euros, staff put up a huge tent and big screens to show the matches. At other times of the year, it hosts big concerts. Local DJs and bands perform at the bar every weekend, and it has hosted international stars including Fatboy Slim, Toploader and US rapper Vanilla Ice. DJ Jazzy Jeff has taken to the decks for the past few years and he will be returning once more on October 28. He has also been joined in the past by his pal Will Smith, so keep your eyes peeled.
How can I wish Barasti a happy 21st birthday?
There will be a huge party at Barasti on Wednesday October 19, featuring performances from hip-hop stars Fatman Scoop and Coolio. Guest get drinks for Dhs21 until 9pm – see what they did there?
