Time Out Says
The much-talked about plant-based Beyond Burger is the latest culinary creation on the menu at Bareburger – which has three branches in Dubai, at City Walk, La Mer and Festival City. With veganism rapidly on the rise in Dubai we just had to try it out to see how it stacks up against the real thing. So with that in mind we head down to the newest branch of the burger chain, in La Mer.
The venue itself has a relaxed beachy vibe, with the bright, airy space filled with families, groups and couples. When our server brings over a juicy burger, we can’t help but check whether we’ve been brought meat by mistake. Our waiter laughs – apparently this question is common because the Beyond Burger is so meat-like. And biting in to the patty, things only get more realistic.
The Beyond Burger contains no animal products (it’s made from pea protein and potato starch) but yet it really does taste almost exactly like meat. Thanks to a clever bit of science (and a lot of beetroot juice) it even “bleeds” when you take a bite, which is not as creepy as it sounds.Indeed, the long-time vegetarian in our group is close to welling up with joy after tasting what he says is the closest thing to real meat he’s had in more than ten years. So it’s top marks for the Beyond Burger, which can be made veggie – with cheese – or vegan with vegan mayo.
But if you’re looking for something a bit meatier, then Bareburger has plenty of organic options, with everything from lamb to camel burgers on offer if you’re feeling adventurous. We go for the Supreme, which is all about the succulent, well-seasoned beef and enormous crispy onion rings perched on top, which are some of the best we’ve tried in Dubai.
Don’t miss the shakes, either. The Banana Foster includes a generous dose of caramel, just like the dessert it’s named after.Add to that a few glasses of homemade lemonade (it’s Dhs5 for a refill) as well as extremely speedy, friendly service, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a very organic evening out.
