Idyllic location, but can the food impress as well?

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011Entering the beautiful, romantic courtyard setting of Bastikiah Nights to be seated with a complimentary, and very tasty lemon and mint juice, you begin to expect a promising evening ahead. This isn't the case. The houmous is overly oily, while the main of Bastikiah chicken with ‘Grand Mam’s sauce’ seemed to be a leftover chicken school dinner with a thick mushroom sauce poured over to conceal the tough, overcooked chicken and incongruous (and unadvertised) layer of what appeared to be congealed mashed potato lurking beneath. Our lamb kebab dish, which came strangely devoid of lamb, fared no better. In BN’s defence, the ‘zoreshk polo’ – rice with berries, saffron and sugar – was tasty, and the traditional sweets that followed both tasty and plentiful. It’s a lovely location for a juice and a chat but we'd be careful what we order the next time around.
