It’s not often you’ll enter a restaurant through a luxuriously upholstered library of meat. In fact, we’d go so far as to say Beefbar is probably the only restaurant in town where you’ll do just that. Touted as a “high-end butchers” (we prefer our own description), it’s certainly that – where else in the city features marble carving slabs and cuts of wagyu displayed like diamond necklaces? Each individual joint of meat looks so precious it could have an Ocean’s 8 heist sequel centred around it.
But you needn’t have the bank account of a blockbuster movie star or sticky fingers of a career criminal to enjoy a meal at this swish DIFC steakhouse.

Despite its Monégasque origins, steaks start from a relatively reasonable Dhs110 (and up, up and away), and there’s a sense of fun amid all that splendour. Take a seat at your lounge-style table and don’t be alarmed if, while you peruse the menu, one of the waiters stands beside you and begins blow-torching your amuse bouche.

We kick off with the petit tartares, featuring a trio of individually presented cuts. The more heavily dressed Black Angus bounces around the palate like the pinball machine it should, while the more delicately seasoned Kobe lets the silky, savoury meat speak for itself. The veal, unsurprisingly, is opinion-dividingly rich, but just as considerately prepared.

On to the mains, and to the reserve filet mignon, described as “the most tender” on the menu. And it is. With cow bells on. Utterly rare but perfectly seared, it’s almost softer than the creamy mash that arrives alongside (selected from a menu of no fewer than 11 different options, including Italian blue cheese and walnuts, and the ugh-inducingly ubiquitous
truffle oil).

And when in Monte Carlo, make like you own a mint. Easily done with the restaurant’s Millionaire burger, featuring Kobe and Angus draped in black truffle and cushioned within an artisanal bun. Even the most austere aristocrat will find it hard not to crack a smile as those meaty juices dribble down their elbows.

It’s a shame, then, that this restaurant is either absolutely swinging or curiously subdued on any given night, and there’s no real knowing which you’re in store for.

Nevertheless, with food like this, you won’t be looking to make a quick getaway too soon.
