Best sandwiches

Fleshy meats, nutritious veggies and creamy condiments… just some staples of a good sandwich. But a portion of places in Dubai have gone above and beyond to please with the perfect combination of ingredients to wrap up in thin tortillas, thick soft baps or toasted slices. Whether sweet, savoury, crunchy, nutty, or a mind-boggling combination, you might have to use your loaf to figure out how some monstrous creations should be tackled (hint: a knife and fork helps). Yes, a few of the pairings may be strange but we can’t deny this lot are winning the sarnie game.

Two pieces of bread can house so much joy if done right. Here’s the sandwiches that get a big thumbs-up

British +971 44222328 Dubai Marina

As an all-round experience in Dubai Marina, this Pier 7 spot is hard to beat. A great selection of drinks, good food, stunning views, a lively atmosphere and friendly staff make this one of the best options in the area. Headed up by British celebrity chef Simon Rimmer, The Scene specialises in British pub classics and comfort food. Try the chicken kiev, which oozes garlic and tarragon butter, or the flaky pan-fried cod served with saffron potatoes, smoky red peppers and paprika sausage. For dessert, there’s classic red berry Eton mess, apple crumble and sticky toffee and date pudding. The large space is designed with a mismatched feel – tables and chairs are different colours of baby blue, green and pinks, while the walls are decorated with comic book cut outs, giving it a real vintage, retro vibe. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to seating; larger groups can slot into one of the bigger boots with cushioned sofas or hunker around a coffee style table for drinks and nibbles. Those looking for a more intimate experience can head out to the terrace, too.

800 824 Sheikh Zayed Road

Eco-friendly store The Change Initiative has an equally commendable café serving up healthy dishes. If you’re here on a shopping trip, then don’t hesitate to pop in, but it’s also worthy of a visit in its own right. The café is a simple space, in keeping with the clean and basic decor of the store. There isn’t a huge menu here, but you’ll most likely find something that tickles your fancy. And with most dishes boasting rich and complex flavours, it’s hard to go wrong. There’s a delicious seared tuna sandwich with moreish mustard mayonnaise on soft, fluffy multi-grain bread, or the tender lamb biryani. If you get here early enough, there are a range of healthy breakfasts, and you can follow any meal with a vegan cupcake. Service can be a little slow, partly because of the preparation times required to produce the meals, but you can use this time to wander around the shop. It might be a simple in-store café, but you’ll find high-quality ingredients, great dishes and, most importantly, reasonable prices here.

Greek 04 277 6926 Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT)

Jumeirah Lakes Towers is quietly becoming a go-to for Greek cuisine, and Labbys is one place to settle your souvlaki hankerings. Modelled on traditional Greek restaurants, the small venue has a rustic, beachy feel and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that’s ripe for a lazy lunch, though it’s in the evenings that you’ll find the city’s homesick expats turning out in droves. Service is hit and miss – sometimes orders and instructions can get lost in the melee, so it’s worth double-checking before turning your attention back to your fellow diners. In the tradition of all the best cuisines, food arrives less in courses than as a steady flow of dishes. Order well and ready your appetite for waves of sweet, grilled peppers, creamy tzatziki, fresh, generous salads and fist-sized souvlaki wraps. From the mains, the moussaka arrives as a hearty slab of aubergine, mince, potato and thick, rich béchamel sauce, destined to leave you happy.
